The old man placed an order for one hamburger, French fries and a drink.

He unwrapped the plain hamburger and carefully cut it in half, placing one half in front of his wife.

He then carefully counted out the French fries, dividing them into two piles and neatly placed one pile in front of his wife.

He took a sip of the drink, his wife took a sip and then set the cup down between them . As he began to eat his few bites of hamburger, the people around them were looking over and whispering.

Obviously they were thinking, 'That poor old couple - all they can afford is one meal for the two of them.'

As the man began to eat his fries a young man came to the table and politely offered to buy another meal for the old couple. The old man said, they were just fine - they were used to sharing everything.

People closer to the table noticed the little old lady hadn't eaten a bite. She sat there watching her husband eat and occasionally taking turns sipping the drink..

Again, the young man came over and begged them to let him buy another meal for them.
This time the old woman said 'No, thank you, we are used to sharing everything.'

Finally, as the old man finished and was wiping his face neatly with the napkin, the young man again came over to the little old lady who had yet to eat a single bite of food and asked 'What is it you are waiting for?'

She answered -- 'THE TEETH.'

The president took AF1 to Europe on an apology tour and degraded our great nation and people. Evidently, Obama lacks historical facts about our incredible sacrifice to protect our allies in Europe in both WWI and WWII. He gravitates toward putting our nation down to appease those around the world, perhaps even make them like him.
After all, everything is about Obama, is it not? Why did he use the word "I" 36 times in the State of the Union. When responding to Haiti it was no different, "I, my team" where stressed. As if he has to score points to inflate his ego further.

Mr. Obama told the French (the French!) that America "has shown arrogance and been dismissive, even derisive" toward Europe. In Prague, he said America has "a moral responsibility to act" on arms control because only the U.S. had "used a nuclear weapon." In London, he said that decisions about the world financial system were no longer made by "just Roosevelt and Churchill sitting in a room with a brandy" -- as if that were a bad thing. And in Latin America, he said the U.S. had not "pursued and sustained engagement with our neighbors" because we "failed to see that our own progress is tied directly to progress throughout the Americas."

Mr. Obama was asked in Europe if he believes in American exceptionalism. He said he did -- in the same way that "the Brits believe in British exceptionalism and the Greeks in Greek exceptionalism." That's another way of saying, "No."
Mr. Obama makes it seem as though there is moral equivalence between America and its adversaries and assumes that if he confesses America's sins, other nations will confess theirs and change. But he won no confessions (let alone change) from the leaders of Venezuela, Nicaragua or Russia. He apologized for America and our adversaries rejoiced. Fidel Castro isn't easing up on Cuban repression, but he is preparing to take advantage of Mr. Obama's policy shifts.
When a president desires personal popularity, he can lose focus on vital American interests. It's early, but with little to show for the confessions, David Axelrod of Team Obama was compelled to say this week that the president planted, cultivated and will harvest "very, very valuable" returns later. Like what?

Carl W. Weaver, 50, of Beaver Springs, went to be with the Lord on Saturday, Sept. 17, 2011. He died unexpectedly at the Evangelical Community Hospital, Lewisburg, due to heart complications.

He was born in Lebanon, a son of the late Ivan M. and Lavina G. (Weaver) Weaver. He was married for 26 years to the former Vera S. Hoover.

Carl was a pastor of Juniata Mennonite Church in Port Royal, a truck driver and a part time farmer.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by seven children, Regina Weaver, of Mountain View, Ariz., Irene, Mrs. Jesse Zook, of East Waterford; Gerald Weaver, of Fairfield, Mont., Luanne Weaver, Gary Weaver, Lynelle Weaver and Evanna Weaver, all at home; one grandson, Caleb Zook; four brothers and six sisters, Leon Weaver and his wife, Velma, of Ephrata, Miriam, Mrs. John Henry Stover, of Emory, Texas, Erma, Mrs. Glenn Martin, of Myerstown, Helen, Mrs. John David Martin, of Woodbury, Tenn., Luke Weaver and his wife, Lois, of Myerstown, Lavina, Mrs. David High of Pitman, Ivan Weaver and his wife, Verna, of Mifflintown, Minerva, Mrs. Aaron Weaver and Glen Weaver and his wife, Anna, all of Millmont, and Sara, Mrs. Elber Calderon, of New Holland.

A viewing will be held from 2 to 4 p.m. and from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the Hartleton Mennonite Church, 418 Laurel Road, Millmont, where the funeral service will be conducted at 10 a.m. Wednesday.

Burial will follow in the adjoining church cemetery.

AT&T has the worst customer service among wireless carriers, according to J.D. Power, while Sprint and T-Mobile topped the list.

More News > J.D. Power, which asked 11,000 customers who had recently bought cell phones to rate their purchasing experiences on a 1,000-point scale, found that AT&T ranked at 744 points, while Sprint and T-Mobile came in at 755 points each.

In Sprint's case, J.D. Powers determined its online sales and variety of offerings won it points, while T-Mobile offered the best service for consumers' dollars.

The company's findings are in keeping with an earlier poll by the American Customer Satisfaction Index, which in May rated AT&T the worst carrier in terms of consumer satisfaction. Interestingly, T-Mobile's score was the second-lowest in that survey, possibly because its customers are increasingly apprehensive about the pending AT&T merger.

In further bad news for AT&T, an April survey by ChangeWave indicated customers blamed the network for dropping calls twice as often as Verizon. This data, plus J.D. Power's ranking and the ACSI's results, suggests AT&T has plenty of room for improvement when it comes to its customers.

Still, compared to all of the four major U.S. carriers, the non-contract company Boost Mobile beat out the competition at 766 points. J.D. Power said of the prepaid company, "Boost Mobile performs particularly well in phone sales representative, offerings and promotions, and cost of service."

Besides discovering consumer preferences among networks, the research group found, "satisfaction is lowest among customers who most recently conducted a Web sales transaction compared with retail and telephone channels."

In other words, people preferred personalized attention to navigating automated phone menus or surfing impersonal websites, even though retail stores often charge more for their products. Perhaps as a result, over 60 percent of those surveyed purchased their phones at a wireless retail store.

The results suggest carriers may gain ground with new customers by boosting their retail presences, giving sales associates up-to-date training and making sure demo models of all phones are available for perusal by customers.

Who Said Trucks Were Safe from Mexico???

Inspectors from the Texas Department of Public Safety have found a million violations in trucks coming from Mexico into El Paso, Texas between 2007 and 2011, according to a report by the El Paso Times. The report comes just weeks before Mexican trucks will be allowed to begin shipping long-haul freight into U.S. territory.

The statistics, obtained by Fox News Latino, show that between the fiscal years of 2007 and the first six months of 2011 the state completed 1.2 million inspections at the El Paso state facilities by the Bridge of Americas and the Zaragoza International Bridge. Inspections led to 1,004,213 violations including brake problems, defective lights, and flat tires.

Mexico says first trucks to operate in U.S. by early September

According to the El Paso Times, the violations found by U.S. officials, many of them repeat offenses, caused 31,519 trucks and 625 drivers to be placed out of service during this time period.

The data comes months after a bilateral agreement was signed earlier this month which will allow Mexican trucks to begin shipping long-haul freight far into U.S. territory. Up to now, Mexican trucks could enter the United States but were restricted to a narrow border zone.

Critics, led by U.S. labor groups like the Teamsters union, say the statistics only reinforce their stance that the new cross-border trucking program will put lives in danger on America's highways.

“This report confirms what we have been saying for years – Mexican trucking companies and their fleets are not held to the same stringent safety standards as American carriers," said Jim Hoffa, general president of Teamsters, to Fox News Latino. "Until they meet every safety, training and environmental standard that our trucking companies meet, we should not allow these unsafe Mexican trucks to drive freely through our country.”

State Rep. Joe Pickett, D-El Paso, told the El Paso Times that the number of violations for the trucks from Mexico is in line with U.S. industry standards. He also assured that the trucks undergo inspections in Mexico and the United States.

"They are either no worse than U.S. trucks or better in some cases," he said.

Regarding the amount of violations among Mexican trucks a spokeswoman for the Texas Department of Public Safety said, "It’s a big number but it’s not out of line when compared to our inspection of American vehicles."

The U.S. Transportation Department has assured that the new deal will put safety first and lift tariffs on more than $2 billion in U.S. manufactured goods and agricultural products while "providing opportunities to increase U.S. exports to Mexico and expanding job creation."

In an attempt to assure the safety of the program, the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration released the requirements that Mexican trucks and their drivers will have to specifically follow. Under the program, all trucks entering the United States will be equipped with electronic onboard recorders which track how many hours the trucks are in service. The recorders will be paid for by the Department of Transportation at a cost of $2.5 million from the federal Highway Trust Fund. All drivers will have to pass safety reviews, drug tests, and be required to read and speak the English language sufficiently to understand highway traffic signs and signals.

Mexico can demand the same requirements of US drivers entering their territory as well.

Some like Bill Graves, the President and chief executive officer of the American Trucking Associations, believe the new requirements are enough to ensure the safety of Mexican trucks on the road.

“American Trucking Associations welcomes this latest step in improving the efficiency of trucking and trade at our southern border," Graves said in a July press release. "We also note that Mexican fleets participating in the program will be bound by the same rules and regulations applicable to American carriers, and we are pleased that the agreement allows for U.S. carriers to compete in Mexico."

Trucks transport roughly $275 billion worth of goods - 70 percent of the total - that pass between the two countries annually, according to a report by the wire service EFE. The prospective accord is expected to create savings of up to $675 million on cross-border shipping costs.

McCLURE — Robert E. Snook, 80, of Log Lane, passed away suddenly Wednesday, Aug. 17, 2011, at his home.

He was born Aug. 20, 1930, in McClure, a son of the late Russell and Mildred (Krick) Snook. On Sept. 9, 1950, he married the former Edna L. (Romig) Snook, who survives.

Robert attended Beaver Springs and McClure area schools.

Mr. Snook had been employed as a sawyer by Snook, Rhine & Arnold Sawmill & Logging, McClure.

He had attended St. John’s Ridge Lutheran Church and Samuel’s Church, both in McClure.

Robert enjoyed hunting, fishing and woodworking and was a member of the Mount Dale hunting cabin. He had previously served as a fire warden and also as treasurer of Black Oak Ridge Cemetery, McClure.

Surviving, in addition to his wife, are two sons, Dennis E. and Janet Snook and Lynn R. “Butch” Snook and companion Pattie Sherwood, all of McClure; two daughters, Donna J. and John Vezzuto, of Berwick, and Sandy J. Master and companion Aaron Trego, of Beaver Springs; grandchildren, Jerry and Melinda Snook, of Middleburg, Holly and James Hanset, of Vancouver, Wash., Nathan and Susan Snook, of Lewisburg, Kenny Snook and companion Jennifer Knepp, of McClure, Jeffrey Stacey and Brandon and Hope Stacey, all of McClure, Andrew and Maura Vezzuto, Hillary and Tom Purcell and Rachel Vezzuto, all of New York, Tonya and Chad Renninger, Nichole Dalawy and Michelle Snook, all of Beaver Springs, and Eric Master and companion Kinsey Swope, Trevor Master and Ashton Master, all of McClure; great-grandchildren, Dustin, Desiree, Holdyn, Devin, Ethan, Owen, Corbin, Kalyn, Kaleb, Colby, Emily, Jaylon, Travis, Kaylin, Justin, Jewelia, Tawnee, Bryanna, Lucas, Eighmy, Lili, Ben, Tyler, Devin, Katie, Addie and Adelyn; two brothers, Alton “Smoke” Snook and Donald “Bud” Snook; and four sisters, Pearl Phillips, Edna Laub, Helen Walter and Mae Renninger.

Mr. Snook was preceded in death by two grandchildren, Christy Lee Snook and Lynn Marie Snook.

Friends and family may call from noon to 2 Monday at the Pheasant Funeral Home, 316 W. Market St., Beavertown, where the funeral will follow at 2 with the Rev. James Plank officiating.

Burial will follow in Black Oak Ridge Cemetery, McClure.

BEAVER SPRINGS — Ryan Lee Sunday Jr. passed away on Tuesday, Aug. 9, 2011, at Evangelical Community Hospital, Lewisburg.

He was born May 13, 2011, in Lewistown, the son of Felicia (Marks) and Ryan L. Sunday Sr., of Beaver Springs.

In addition to his parents, he is survived by his sisters, Caleigh Sue and Alexis Jo; paternal grandparents, Gina and Douglas T. Sunday Sr., of Beaver Springs; paternal great-grandparents, Shirley Sunday, of Beaver Springs, and Gaylene and husband Lonnie Hile, of Mount Pleasant Mills; maternal grandparents, Sonya Marks and Lynn Paine, of Beaver Springs; aunts and uncles, Angie Carter, Amy Rowe, Junior Marks, Dustin Renninger, Sheina Gardner, Doug Sunday Jr., Celena Hughes, Sheena Sunday and Andria Hughes; and numerous cousins.

Preceding him in death were grandparents, Cloyd “Dick” Sunday, Gertrude Yohn, Lori Mallery and Bonnie Fultz.

Ryan Lee Sunday Jr.'s memorial service will be held on Sunday at 2 p.m. at Heller-Hoenstine Funeral Homes Inc. (Woodlawn) 200 N. Main St., Lewistown.

The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.

Two 13-year-old boys drowned at around 3:25 p.m. Thursday in the Juniata River near McVeytown,

Dakota Cutshall, 13, of McVeytown, and Kyle Austin, 13, of Mattawana, were swimming in the Juniata River near McVeytown along with 2 other young people when Cutshall jumped off of a rock into the river in a deep hole of water,

Pennsylvania State Police Lewistown said the river was approximately 12 feet deep in the area of the incident.

Cutshall was observed struggling when Austin jumped in to assist, the release states. The boys plunged into the deep water and failed to surface, according to witnesses at the scene, the coroner said.

The victims were transported to the Lewistown Hospital E.R. where they were pronounced dead shortly after arrival, according to the release. Lynch ruled both deaths as accidental drownings by Lynch.

Mifflin County Emergency Services Director Phil Lucas said emergency personnel responded to the scene and were able to pull the 2 Boys from the river. Lucas said upon recovery both were unconscious and CPR was attempted before the boys were taken to the hospital.

Officials remind area residents to use caution when swimming, Residents are warned not to swim alone and to use a life preserver,

Fire In Central Pennsylvania Farmhouse Kills 7 Children

LOYSVILLE, Pa. (AP) – Seven children, including a 7-month-old girl, perished in a fast-moving fire in a Pennsylvania farmhouse while their mother milked cows and their father dozed in a milk truck down the road, police said Wednesday.

No cause or origin of the fire had been determined by early Wednesday morning, but the children’s grandfather, Noah Sauder, told The Associated Press the blaze may have started in the kitchen, where the family used a propane heater. Fire marshals were investigating.

The blaze tore through the home, exposing the interior and scorching the front, rear and side. A car parked beside the house was burned to the bare metal, its windows shattered.

Public records indicate the parents are Theodore and Janelle Clouse. A neighbor described the family as hard-working.

Police said the children’s father had left the two-story home on a working farm in dairy country not far from the state capital, to begin his rounds hauling milk around 10 p.m. Tuesday. Two children, ages 2 and 3, were watching television at the time.

The father picked up milk and then parked the truck about a mile from home before nodding off, state police Trooper Tom Pinkerton said.

Soon after, the 3-year-old smelled smoke in the home and ran to the barn to alert her mother, who apparently tried to get into the house. The woman then ran to the homes of two neighbors before getting someone to call 911, then ran with the child to the father’s truck and banged on its windows, screaming that their home was on fire, he said.

By the time the father returned to the home it was fully engulfed by flames, Pinkerton said. Firefighters had arrived and were battling the blaze at the charred home.

The Perry County coroner ruled the children died of smoke inhalation, Pinkerton said. Officials said they were six girls, ranging in age from 7 months to 11 years old and a 7-year-old boy.

A neighbor, Deana Doran, said her dog’s barking woke her up around 11 p.m. and she thought she heard someone calling, “Hello! Hello!”

She told The Associated Press she saw the first-floor rear of the home burning and dialed 911. Once she got outside she saw the flames spreading to the rest of the home.

Doran said her 10-year-old son was friends with the 11-year-old girl who lived at the home.

“He plays with her every day,” Doran said, visibly distraught.

“I don’t know how I’m going to handle this with him.”

Friends and family were outside the gutted home on Wednesday morning to help milk cows and do other chores. Sauder, the children’s grandfather told the AP the parents were awake and talking to people, just trying to find ways to cope with the tragedy. The father, he said, was out talking to friends and workers on the farm.

“He seems he might be just as good as to keep a little busy,” said Sauder, who at times struggled to express his emotions. “It’s really hard, I’m sure.”

One neighbor said the family had lived in the home about four years.

“You wonder why does this have to happen,” Ray Zimmerman told AP, adding that the children’s father, Ted, told him “he’s trying to keep moving so he doesn’t have to think about it. We know he has a battle.”

The house is one of a cluster of homes near an intersection in Loysville, a rural stretch of farm land about 25 miles west of Harrisburg.

Police said the family wasn’t Mennonite, although many Amish and Mennonite families live in the area.

Authorities temporarily closed part of a highway near the farm because of the fire.

Pharr police release new details in fatal shooting of missionary in Mexico

PHARR — A police officer watched the blue Chevrolet pickup truck speed against traffic toward the checkpoint at the Pharr-Reynosa International Bridge shortly after noon Wednesday.

Inside was Sam Davis and his wife, Nancy, who was still alive after suffering a gunshot to her head about 70 miles south of the Rio Grande, police said.

Police and U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers called an ambulance, which rushed the 59-year-old missionary to McAllen Medical Center. She died at 1:54 p.m. Wednesday.

The rural Monte Alto couple worked as missionaries in Mexico for more than three decades.

“We’re glad he was able to get to our bridge and we were able to get the medical assistance for his spouse,” Pharr Police Chief Ruben Villescas said. “However, this tragically ended with a perishing end.”

TROUBLED TERRITORY

The couple was returning from a mission near San Fernando, about 70 miles south of Reynosa, police said.

On the outskirts of the city of about 30,000 residents, the missionaries encountered a drug cartel checkpoint and refused to stop, authorities said.

Several men in a black pickup truck tailed the couple past the impromptu checkpoint and opened fire. Sources said at least five gunshots struck the back of the missionaries’ pickup truck, leaving it “riddled with bullets.”

The missionaries may have been fortunate to escape the region and avoid kidnapping.

The greater San Fernando area gained notoriety in August, when 72 migrants were found slain in a mass grave on a ranch outside the city.

The region is under the control of the Zetas, one of two drug smuggling organizations that dominate and openly battle for control over northeast Mexico.

In November, the U.S. State Department issued a travel warning for overland travel along the highways that lead into San Fernando, saying highway robberies and car jackings are common in the area.

The missionaries’ chase across northern Tamaulipas state is the latest chapter involving U.S. citizens caught in the crossfire of Mexico’s drug war.

In October, so-called drug cartel “pirates” attacked Tiffany Young-Hartley and David Hartley on Falcon Reservoir. The McAllen couple allegedly fell under attack from cartel gunmen on the lake, leaving David Hartley and his personal watercraft missing since. Young-Hartley escaped unscathed and the case remains unsolved — with Hartley widely presumed dead — after its lead Mexican investigator was decapitated in the days after the incident.

Also in October, University of Texas at Brownsville student Jonathon William Torres Cazarez died when his passenger bus was hijacked near Ciudad Mante, a city in southern Tamaulipas state. He was one of two people reportedly slain on the bus.

Across Mexico, about 35,000 people have been killed in drug violence since late 2006.

JOINT INVESTIGATION

Pharr police, CBP officers and agents with the FBI and U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement continue to investigate the case.

Villescas said he was waiting to learn Wednesday evening which Mexican agency would lead the investigation. Mexican investigators contacted Wednesday evening said they had not learned of the missionaries’ attack.

The Mexican interior ministry’s office issued a statement Wednesday night, saying the government “regrets” Nancy Davis’ death.

“The interior ministry reports that authorities are investigating the case for the purpose of clarifying facts and will act accordingly to punish the person or persons responsible,” the statement reads in Spanish.

Mexican army officials in Reynosa said they had not been alerted of the attack Wednesday afternoon, but speculated drug cartel gunmen were behind it.

Military officer Santiago Santa Maria said no violent incidents had been reported to his office since Monday, but did reckon that drug cartels were likely behind the attack.

“Sometimes, it’s their people,” Santa Maria said in Spanish, referring to drug smugglers. “But since the populace is intimidated by them, nobody says anything. The media will not report anything until two or three days later.”

STRONG FAITH

Word of the attack on the missionaries spread quickly via the Internet early Wednesday afternoon.

An online post on Twitter by the Beavertown God’s Missionary Church in Beavertown, Pa., lamented Nancy Davis’ slaying.

“Missionary Nancy Davis has gone to Heaven as a martyr,” the online post states. “This afternoon, after 38 years of missionary service she paid the ultimate sacrifice.”

The couple founded the Gospel Proclaimers Missionary Association in March 1988, according to the nonprofit group’s articles of incorporation.

The group was founded to establish and maintain missions in foreign countries by conducting camps, operating orphanages and “caring for the poor and needy and the distributing of bibles.”

The Davis’ pastor, Jeff Leonard of Pharr, briefly stopped at their home west of Monte Alto late Wednesday afternoon. He declined comment on the situation, deferring to relatives, who he said were distraught at their sudden loss.

A religious man himself, Villescas called Davis and his wife “true warriors for Christ.”

“Their faith must be strong,” the chief said.

The Unwelcome Stranger!!!

A while ago, my Dad met a stranger who was new to our small town. From the beginning, Dad was fascinated with this enchanting newcomer and soon invited him to live with our family. The stranger was quickly accepted and was around from then on.

As I grew up, I never questioned his place in my family. In my young mind, he had a special niche. My parents were complementary instructors: Mom taught me good from evil, and Dad taught me to obey. But the stranger...he was our storyteller. He would keep us spellbound for hours on end with adventures, mysteries and comedies.
If I wanted to know anything about politics, history or science, he always knew the answers about the past, understood the present and even seemed able to predict the future! He took my family to the first major league ball game. He made me laugh, and he made me cry. The stranger never stopped talking, but Dad didn't seem to mind.

Sometimes, Mom would get up quietly while the rest of us were shushing each other to listen to what he had to say, and she would go to the kitchen for peace and quiet. (I wonder now if she ever prayed for the stranger to leave.)

Dad ruled our household with certain moral convictions, but the stranger never felt obligated to honor them. Profanity, for example, was not allowed in our home... Not from us, our friends or any visitors. Our longtime visitor, however, got away with four-letter words that burned my ears and made my dad squirm and my mother blush. My Dad didn't permit the liberal use of alcohol. But the stranger encouraged us to try it on a regular basis. He made cigarettes look cool, cigars manly and pipes distinguished.
He talked freely (much too freely!) about sex. His comments were sometimes blatant, sometimes suggestive, and generally embarrassing.

I now know that my early concepts about relationships were influenced strongly by the stranger. Time after time, he opposed the values of my parents, yet he was seldom rebuked... And NEVER asked to leave.

More than fifty years have passed since the stranger moved in with our family. He has blended right in and is not nearly as fascinating as he was at first. Still, if you could walk into my parents' den today, you would still find him sitting over in his corner, waiting for someone to listen to him talk and watch him draw his pictures.

His name?.... .. .

We just call him 'TV.'
